NC CIVIL RIGHTS MARKERS
Recognizing our efforts that expand liberties for all.
The North Carolina African American Heritage Commission, partnering with the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, instituted a program to commemorate significant 50 people, sites and events of the modern Civil Rights movement. Chowan Discovery's three nominations were approved. Two are in the Winton Triangle.

New Ahoskie Rallies
New Ahoskie Baptist Church and Chowan Discovery received the first North Carolina Civil Rights Trails marker in 2021. While the marker denotes the Civil Rights rallies held at New Ahoskie, the nomination includes other actions that resulted in fairer treatment of people of color. These include the issues of voting, education, employment, public safety, housing and social services. A video link includes commentary by the late Reverend John L. Scott who led the rallies and other efforts.

Kinston Sit-Ins
Chowan Discovery's second North Carolina Civil Rights Trails marker was dedicated in February, 2023. The marker commemorates Civil Rights sit-ins held in Kinston, NC in the early 1960s. We worked with Reverend Roosevelt Whitehead, pastor of First Winton Baptist Church and son of the one of the leaders of the sit-ins.

Hobson R. Reynolds
Chowan Discovery's third North Carolina Civil Rights Trails marker was dedicated in October, 2024. The CDG worked with the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World to honor its late Grand Exalted Ruler, Hobson R. Reynolds. Reynolds, a Winton native, strove for Civil Rights nationally for over fifty years. He also donated and established the Elks' headquarters on his family's farm in Winton, NC. For more about Reynolds see this link.
