Tribute to
Barbara Archer Gregory
1942-2008
Barbara Archer Gregory's ancestor, Jeb Catus, was one of the first from
the Winton Triangle to seek higher education at Hampton University in
the early 1870's. After graduation, Catus taught at various schools in
Hertford County, and ultimately was of the first group of teachers at
Chowan Academy-Waters Training School. For many years, he also served
as Winton's postmaster.
Catus' great-grandaughter, Barbara Archer Gregory deserves much credit
for unifying the core group of researchers of the Chowan Discovery Group.
Her respected research skills have benefited us greatly. In my last conversation
with Barbara, I described the creation and purpose of the CDG to her.
She eagerly accepted the invitation to join the Advisory Group.
Proud of her Archer, Catus, Copeland, Douglas, Lang and Nickens ancestry,
Barbara amassed over 8000 names in her treasured computer database of
families in the region.

the memorial obelisk of Gadsden's great-grandparents, James and
Milly Walden. The Waldens sent their seven daughters to college
in the 1880's and 1890's. James Walden was a Union Army veteran,
a leader of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, co-founder of the
Walden community school and a member of the Chowan Educational
Association, the parent organization that founded Waters Training

Our Barbara passed in May of 2008. A few weeks later, several of us
held an impromptu memorial for Barbara while researching historical
sites in Gates County. It is far from being our last tribute to Barbara
Archer Gregory.
